We often focus on the expiration dates of food, but many household items also have a lifespan. Knowing when to replace these items can save you money, improve your health, and enhance your home environment.

Kitchen Essentials

  • Sponges and Dishcloths: These harbour bacteria rapidly. Replace them every week or two, or more frequently if visibly dirty or mouldy.
  • Cutting Boards: Wooden boards can harbour bacteria, especially if not properly cleaned. Replace them every year or two. Plastic boards can last longer but should be replaced when they show signs of wear.
  • Kitchen Towels: Replace kitchen towels every few months to prevent bacteria build-up.
  • Teflon Pans: The non-stick coating on Teflon pans can degrade over time. Signs of wear include food sticking or the coating peeling. Consider replacing them every 3-5 years.

Bathroom Items

  • Toothbrushes: Replace your toothbrush every three months to maintain oral hygiene.
  • Toothpaste: Check the expiry date on the tube. While toothpaste doesn't typically go bad, its effectiveness can decline over time.
  • Loofahs and Sponges: These can harbour bacteria. Replace them every month or two.
  • Bath Towels: Replace bath towels every 2-3 years to maintain absorbency.
  • Shower Curtains: Replace shower curtains when they show signs of mould or mildew.

Bedding and Textiles

  • Pillows: Replace pillows every 1-2 years to maintain support and hygiene.
  • Mattresses: While mattresses can last up to 10 years, their lifespan depends on usage. Consider replacing them if you experience discomfort or back pain.
  • Duvets and Blankets: These can last several years, but check for signs of wear and tear. Wash them regularly to maintain hygiene.
  • Curtains and Blinds: The lifespan of curtains and blinds depends on the material. For general wear and tear, consider replacing them every 5-7 years.

Cleaning Products

  • Bleach: Bleach typically lasts for around six months to a year. Check the expiry date on the bottle.
  • All-Purpose Cleaners: While these products don't have specific expiry dates, their effectiveness can decline over time. If you notice a decrease in cleaning power, it's time for a replacement.
  • Sponges and Brushes: Replace these regularly to prevent bacteria build-up.

Other Household Items

  • Smoke Alarms and Carbon Monoxide Detectors: Replace batteries at least once a year and the entire unit every 10 years.
  • Air Filters: Replace air filters in your HVAC system according to the manufacturer's recommendations.
  • Kitchen Appliances: The lifespan of appliances varies. Look for signs of wear and tear, such as noise, leaks, or reduced efficiency.
